Welcome to Self-Advocacy. In this unit, students learn to speak up for themselves. The meaning and importance of self-advocacy is taught first, before students learn specific steps that can help them self-advocate in their lives. Students learn to identify “What I want.”, “Who I can talk to.”, and “What I can say.” in a variety of realistic scenarios. Next, students learn to distinguish between situations that call for self-advocacy and situations that call for flexibility. Finally, each student learns about the IEP and identifies the members of their IEP team. The unit ends with a mock IEP experience in which each student practices self-advocating at their IEP meeting.
